PMC Jewelry

PMC stands for Precious Metal Clay. It is a fantastic new material that was developed in Japan. It contains tiny silver particles, a non-toxic organic binder and water. In this form it resembles clay and can be manipulated, rolled, pressed and stamped into just like a clay. Now here comes the clever part. Once you are happy with your design you let the clay dry out until the water has evaporated then it can be fired in a kiln or even with a hand held torch. All the organic binder burns off and the silver particles fuse together. Hey presto, it turns into pure (99.9%) silver.

For many jewelry makers who have dreamed of working with metal but have had nightmares about using the torch, Metal Clay, also called Precious Metal Clay (PMC) and Art Clay, may be their dream come true. Metal clay is a relatively new medium in jewelry making. Precious Metal Clay (PMC) and Art Clay are two well known brands which can be sculpted and then fired to create metal jewelry. You no longer need a torch, and you can get the same beautiful results

However, keep in mind that while you don’t need to use a torch to necessarily solder metals together, it can be helpful to know a little about metal work in order to clean and finish metal clay pieces.
